16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence

16_days_logo Yesterday marked the beginning of the 16 Days Campaign.  Nov. 25-Dec. 10 is devoted to raising awareness about gender violence internationally.  This year’s theme is Human Rights for Women = Human Rights for All.  These dates were chosen because they fall between International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (Nov. 25) and International Human Rights Day (Dec. 10).   The website for this event has lots of great information, including a good bibliography and resources page.  Spread the word!

New study on youths’ attitudes towards violence against women

This study, just in from Australia, reports the following disturbing attitudes amongst youth about violence against women:

  • One in four see violence at home
  • A third of boys say it’s ok to hit girls
  • A third of Year 10 girls had unwanted sex
  • Effects of Media Images on Men

So many of us have probably heard about the negative effects unrealistic media images of women have on real girls and women.  Now, a new study finds the same is true for men.  We have to keep pressure on the media to change this unjust and unhealthy system.
